The DVB Multimedia Home Platform (MHP) is the software interface between interactive digital TV applications and the terminals on which those applications execute. Such terminals are typically set-top-boxes or integrated digital TVs, both of which are also known as MHP receivers, platforms, hosts or clients. MHP is Java based allowing MHP applications to be deployed to a wide variety of MHP platforms based on multiple CPU architectures and multiple operating systems. Whilst MHP is deployed in the European market, it is also adopted in a number of worldwide locations. In fact the equivalent standard for the US cable industry, OCAP 1.1.1, the OpenCable Application Platform, is based on MHP 1.0.3 and is consistent with the Globally Executable MHP (GEM) specification. Note: applications which are conformant with GEM should run on all GEM compliant middleware. MHP and GEM was written by the members of the Digital Video Broadcasting Project (DVB), which is an industry consortium committed to designing global standards for the delivery of digital TV and data services.
